Berlin Authorities Are Concerned with the Possibility of Applying US Sanctions to German State Bodies
OREANDA-NEWS. The German government is concerned with the fact that new US sanctions against the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2, if introduced, may affect German state bodies related to the project in one way or another, as well as companies of the country.
This was reported on June 12 by the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, citing an internal document of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. According to it, new sanctions may be imposed on “all firms” that will provide insurance services, modernization of the pipeline network or, for example, retrofitting pipe-laying vessels. “The same applies to the provision of services such as monitoring, inspection and certification, which are necessary for the operation of Nord Stream 2,” the document reads. Representatives of the Ministry believe that the bill proposed by US senators threatens to impose sanctions against the administrative and technical actions of state agencies in connection with the completion or operation of the gas pipeline.
Head of the Ministry, Peter Altmaier, claimed that new American sanctions against Nord Stream 2 do not stimulate international cooperation and do not comply with the provisions of international law.
