Belarusian Presidential Candidate Asked German Chancellor for Help
OREANDA-NEWS. Opposition presidential candidate in Belarus Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was interviewed by the German newspaper Bild. She turned to German Chancellor Angela Merkel with a request to contact Alexander Lukashenko and demand that he hold fair election.
A journalist asked Tsikhanouskaya to formulate a message to Merkel. “Mrs. Merkel, contact Lukashenko. Tell him that we don’t want war. All we want is fair elections. We are tired of the dictator’s rule,” Belarusian politician said in response.
Tsikhanouskaya is considered to be a single opposition candidate, after her husband Sergey Tsikhanousky was detained. A criminal case was opened against him under an article on obstruction of election. This happened after he tried to run as a presidential candidate.
In an interview, Tsikhanouskaya said that after running for president, she received threats related to her two children. “When I said that I would take my husband’s place, they called me anonymously and said that if I do not withdraw my candidacy, they would send me in jail, and my children would be sent to an orphanage. After the call, I immediately sent my children to a safe place abroad,” she said.
