OREANDA-NEWS. President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, during a meeting with the Chairman of the Supreme Court Valentin Sukalo, admitted that the social system existing in the country is partly authoritarian. According to the head of state, it is necessary to build another system that is not centered by the personality of the president.

“I believe that, despite the fact that we have a somewhat authoritarian system for organizing public life… we need to ensure that the system is not centered by individuals, including Lukashenko,” the politician said.

The Belarusian President noted that the draft of the new Constitution, currently being developed, should be submitted for public discussion. “So that they examine it, express their opinion, what they like, or don’t like, express their views,” he explained, stressing that a return to the Constitution of 1994 cannot be a movement forward.

Lukashenko announced the introduction of “drastic amendments” to the current Constitution at the end of June. In particular, he pointed out the need to re-distribute the powers of the authorities at different levels and transfer some of the rights “down to the chairmen of the district executive committees and governors.”
