OREANDA-NEWS. December 28, 2012. The Moldovan parliament today ratified the Moldova-EU agreement on the protection of geographical indications for agricultural and food products, which was signed in Brussels on 26 June 2012.
The agreement provides for the protection of geographical indications for agricultural and food products, as well as wine and alcoholic beverages. Also the document falls into the dispositions of the future deep and comprehensive free trade zone and is meant to encourage the agricultural and food products trade between both parties.
The agreement will allow Moldovan producers to protect the geographical indications for their products on the territory of the EU and will back the common policy in the quality sector.
According to the document, Moldova will benefit from a five-year transition period, in order to take complementary measures to stop the illegal use of geographical indications. In the near future, the State Agency on Intellectual Property (AGEPI) in cooperation with the Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry and the Customs Service will elaborate an action plan on the implementation of the agreement's provisions.
