Food security is one of the most pressing challenges of our time against the backdrop of continuing financial and economic problems, Vladimir Putin said on opening the meeting. Clearly, the prosperity and quality of life of people living in the Asia-Pacific region cannot be improved without a prompt and effective resolution of this important issue, the Russian President said.
Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences in connection with the earthquake in China, which occurred the previous day, and wished a speedy recovery and wellbeing to all those affected.
Vladimir Putin congratulated President of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on his birthday.
The discussion continued over a working breakfast.
Vladimir Putin held a news conference following the leaders’ session. The Russian President spoke about the forum’s results in 2012 and the declaration adopted at the summit.
The document reflects the collaborative approach to the development of cooperation within APEC in areas of priority for the Russian presidency. These include trade liberalisation, economic integration, food security, cooperation in innovation, development of transport and logistics. Themed appendices to the declarations emphasise the importance of innovation-based growth, energy security, and cross-border cooperation in higher education and combating corruption.
