OREANDA-NEWS. May 12, 2012. President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, who arrived in Turkmenistan to take part in the International conference on refugees in the Muslim world.

During the meeting the President of Turkmenistan and the head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) discussed the key issues of the agenda of the forthcoming International conference that will bring together the representatives of all countries, members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, a number of observer countries and international structures. The Turkmen leader and his guest exchanged their views on the key aspects and prospects for efficient cooperation within the framework of the UNHCR. Underlining that experience gained by Turkmenistan in this sphere deserved serious attention of the world community, Mr. Antonio Guterres highly appreciated the achievements of our country on the way of the fundamental social, economic and democratic changes that laid a solid foundation for the further development of the Turkmen state and society.

Berdimuhamedov expressed the readiness to continue the fruitful dialogue with the UNHCR that satisfied the global goals of the sustainable development, achieving which had been closely related with solution of humanitarian issues, protection of human rights. Noting that the International conference in Ashgabat would be an efficient step on this way, the Turkmen leader wished every success in the work of the forum held with the support of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
