Belarus President against Sudden Moves in Economic Policy
OREANDA-NEWS. April 15, 2011. The economy does not need any sudden moves, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko told the government session held on 15 April to discuss current matters of Belarus’ social and economic development.
“There should be no sudden moves. Finance and money don’t like hassle and sudden moves. And people may have got what they wanted. So let’s accurately shape the policy that we should follow now,” said Alexander Lukashenko.
According to the head of state, both the government and the National Bank failed to respond to the ongoing global trends in time. “Even before the presidential election we expected that we would be pressured purposefully, destabilizing the situation. And so it happened: first the currency market, then the food market and then we had the explosion in metro – an entire chain,” said the President.
“It is sad that today representatives of the National Bank and the government have gathered here, waiting for some additional decisions [of the President]. Can’t you get together and make a coordinated decision, albeit an unpopular one, yourselves? The President has said his word. Why do you expect more pointers?” wondered the Belarusian head of state.
Alexander Lukashenko said he was confident that Belarus can handle all the economic problems on its own. Proper efforts resulted in a 20% increase in foreign currency proceeds from export in April alone, said the President.
Alexander Lukashenko said that “We cannot put pressure on people although it was primarily them that created the situation. At the 2010 Dazhynki harvest end festival I said that the Belarusian nation will live in peace but if people create frenzy, they will get this. So they have got this”.
Speaking about the food market, the President said that any frenzied demand for sugar, sunflower oil, and other foods will be satisfied and there was no need to converts apartments and garages into food warehouses.
“We shouldn’t reproach people though. Blame is on us and those, who fling these issues to us via so-called mass media, producing frenzy. We should have foreseen it. It has been said more than once,” he added.
