OREANDA-NEWS. January 17, 2011. President Viktor Yanukovych conducted a consultative meeting on criminal justice reform.

Speaking at the meeting, Viktor Yanukovych noted that further delays in conducting the appropriate criminal justice reform are unacceptable. "It is not only about the delay of implementation of Ukraine's commitments to the Council of Europe, it is the question of protection of all the citizens of Ukraine from manifestations of arbitrary rule of law enforcement officials and criminal justice system as well as inability of a common citizens to protect their constitutional rights," President Yanukovych said.

"We must abandon the old Soviet system of relations between a man and the police. Ukraine needs a new modern legislation in the field of criminal justice that would take into account, inter alia, the opinion of the Venice Commission," he said.
