Situation in Republic of Guinea
OREANDA-NEWS. November 22, 2010. In Guinea on November 15 the National Independent Electoral Commission announced the results of the presidential run-off elections. Alpha Conde, leader of the Rally of the Guinean People party, was declared as the winner. He won 52.52 percent of the votes against the 47.48 percent cast for his rival, Cellou Diallo, leader of the Union of Democratic Forces of Guinea. A decision is currently expected from the country’s Supreme Court, to which belongs the right of final approval of the poll results after considering all appeals received.
Yet reports are coming in about the continuing violence in a number of quarters of the capital and in the central part of Guinea involving young people. Forces securing the electoral process are taking measures of counteraction; there are several dead and dozens wounded. The incumbent head of state on November 17 declared a state of emergency in the country.
No one was hurt among the Russian citizens there.
Moscow is closely watching developments in the Republic of Guinea. We hope that the sides will exercise responsibility and take steps to restore calm and public order.
