President of Turkmenistan Held Meeting with Frederick Starr
OREANDA-NEWS. September 21, 2010. During the visit to the United States President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov received Frederick Starr, Director of the Central Asia-Caucasus Institute at Johns Hopkins University (Washington).
Greeting the Turkmen leader, the notable political scientists, one of the leading U.S. experts in Central Asia, Professor Frederick Starr thanked the Turkmen leader for the opportunity of a personal meeting as well as to express support personally to the reform strategy for political, social and economic development of Turkmenistan and the wise and prudent foreign policy of its leadership.
Using this occasion, Frederick Starr congratulated President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on the success of his speech at the regular session of the UN General Assembly and focused on the importance of the new initiatives put forward by the Turkmen leader to address the critical issues of global development of particular concern to humanity.
Putting emphasis on the growing role of independent neutral Turkmenistan on the international arena, Professor Frederick Starr focused on the particular importance of the efforts taken by the Turkmen state to facilitate regional integration and promote creating an atmosphere of stability and security in Central Asia. In this context Professor Frederick Starr evaluated highly Turkmenistan’s recent initiative to settle the crisis in Afghanistan, build the reliable platform for an effective regional mechanism for cooperation in the name of peace, sustainable development and progress.
Substantiating Turkmenistan’s resolute approach to achieving security, combating extremism and terrorism, drug trafficking, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that an adequate response to contemporary threats and challenges could be only be collective. Turkmenistan stood ready to place its profound economic, resource, transport potential at the service of the Central Asian region, said the Turkmen leader expressing belief that these efforts would win over more supporters interested in the future of Central Asia, the Eurasian continent and the whole world.
The proposal put forward at the 65th session of the UN General Assembly to develop the universal mechanisms for safety and security of pipeline infrastructure that reflected Turkmenistan’s purely pragmatic approach to designing new architecture of global security is consistent with this objective.
Expressing admiration for Turkmenistan’s achievements, Professor Frederick Starr said that the publications of the research papers and other books of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov gave a deeper insight into the appropriateness of Turkmenistan’s unprecedented achievements in the present period. Also, the scientist focused on the significance of the rich historical and cultural heritage of the Turkmen people for the world historical science and highly evaluated the large-scale ongoing work on restoration and conservation of ancient monuments of universal value in Turkmenistan.
Thanking Professor Frederick Starr for taking an active scientific approach to the study of the Turkmen history, the President of Turkmenistan invited him to deliver lectures at the institutions of higher education in the country and visit numerous unique monuments of the bygone epochs of the glorious history of the Turkmen people.
The sides exchanged views on the other fields of international politics, where Turkmenistan’s enormous potential of tolerance, friendliness and good neighbourliness as well as its willingness to cooperate with all countries of the world could be employed.
