Russia Took Part at International Conference on Disarmament
OREANDA-NEWS. June 29, 2010. A Russian delegation headed by First Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Denisov took part in the International Conference on Disarmament in Central Asia and the Caspian Basin held in Ashgabat.
The conference offered a detailed review and analysis of the situation in questions of disarmament and non-proliferation and the participation of the region’s states in the relevant agreements and regimes, along with an interested discussion on the international legal framework in this area and on its streamlining. It also examined the role and experience of international organizations in addressing disarmament and non-proliferation issues and the possibilities for their assisting the efforts of the states of the region.
The conference expressed the unanimous opinion that ensuring security in the region is the prerogative of the states of Central Asia and the Caspian Basin.
An extensive exchange of views demonstrated the desire of the states of the region to seek mechanisms to guarantee blending the interests of the various countries.
The conference contributed to strengthening regional peace and stability, continuing the process of disarmament and the reinforcement of collective security, increasing the role of the United Nations and improving the effectiveness of regional mechanisms.
