OREANDA-NEWS. June 02, 2010. The UN Security Council on May 28 unanimously adopted resolution 1925 extending the current mandate of the United Nations peacekeeping force in the DRC until June 30 this year and converting it from then on into a United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) with the reduction of its military component by 2,000 personnel. The Council has authorized the new operation to stay in the DRC until June 30, 2011.

In view of the new phase that has been reached in the country, the mandate of MONUSCO includes help to the DRC Government in the protection of the civilian population and support in efforts aimed at stabilizing the situation and consolidating peace in the country.

The resolution envisions that any future reconfiguration of MONUSCO shall be based on the evolution of the situation on the ground, particularly as regards security; an improved capacity of the DRC Government to effectively protect the civilian population; and the consolidation of State authority across the territory.

Russia took an active part in the elaboration of the resolution, basing itself on assessment of the real situation in the country, the importance of consolidating peace and stability in the DRC and consideration of the position of its Government. We intend to continue to exert efforts toward vigorously advancing a settlement in the DRC.
