Azerbaijan and UN Discusses Human Rights Issues
OREANDA-NEWS. May 25, 2010. President Ilham Aliyev received a delegation led by Representative of the UN Secretary General on IDP’s humn rights issues, Walter Kalin.
The President said the visit of the UN delegation on IDP’s human rights issues, led by Walter Kalin, was a good opportunity to monitor the situation of refugees and IDPs in Azerbaijan. Mentioning that over a million Azerbaijanis became refugees and IDPs as a result of Armenia`s military aggression against the country, the President talked about the works carried out to ameliorate their social conditions and characterized these steps as one of the key priorities of Azerbaijan government policies.
The President said his country would spare no efforts towards finding a solution to the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and stopping the injustice by ending Armenia`s aggression against Azerbaijan.
UN Secretary General’s representative on IDP’s human rights issues, Walter Kalin, recalled his 2007 visit to Azerbaijan and the discussions on the conditions of refugees and IDPs carried out during his visit. Walter Kalin said that during his visit, he familiarized himself with the situation of refugees and IDPs both in Baku and in regions, adding that Azerbaijani government had done great job in this regard since his 2007 trip.
