UN Disarmament Commission Conducts Session
OREANDA-NEWS. April 21, 2010. A regular session of the United Nations Disarmament Commission (UNDC 2010) took place in New York from March 29 to April 16.
The delegations of UN member states that participated in this forum discussed a wide range of problems relating to disarmament, arms control, and the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD), and continued to work on elements of the draft declaration of the 2010s as the Fourth Disarmament Decade.
A feature of UNDC 2010 was that its work proceeded against the background of the signing in Prague on April 8 of the new Russian-US Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty and the Nuclear Security Summit held in Washington on April 12-13. These events doubtless positively influenced the overall mood of the debate, forming a common view on the steady trend towards overcoming the stagnation in disarmament.
Our delegation took an active part in the session, pushing Russian priorities with respect to the agenda. We are satisfied with the work results. We believe that the UN Disarmament Commission is an important element in the UN multilateral disarmament machinery. We expect that the work to prepare concrete recommendations on further steps in disarmament and non-proliferation will continue.
