Russia Views Customs Union as Present-Day Necessity
OREANDA-NEWS. April 02, 2010. The creation of the Customs Union (by Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan) as part of the EurAsEC is the first successful attempt of the integration processes within the CIS, Speaker of the Federation Council Sergei Mironov announced on Tuesday.
"There are many speculations on the matter," he observed after a round table meeting at the upper chamber of the Russian parliament. He is confident that the creation of the union is the "major event in the life of the CIS and EurAsEC."
"In the last 20 years after the breakdown of the Soviet Union, there have been numerous attempts to restore the lost ties," Mironov noted, adding that he was sure that integration within the CIS was absolutely necessary. He also stated that Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Ukraine could join the union in the future.
