Foreign Ministry Collegium Meets in Session
OREANDA-NEWS. February 27, 2010. The Foreign Ministry Collegium met on February 26 to consider Russian priorities with respect to nuclear-weapons nonproliferation in the light of the upcoming Review Conference of the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in May 2010.
Special attention was devoted to the need to ensure the sustained operation and preserve the integrity of the NPT as a mainstay of collective security. Today’s challenges due in part to the danger of nuclear materials getting into the hands of non-state actors can and must be eliminated on the basis of the NPT. Any attempts to revise the provisions of the Treaty or the 1995 decision on its indefinite and unconditional extension are inadmissible.
The discussion concluded with a reiteration of the focus of the Russian side on preparing a concerted package of measures to increase the effectiveness of the NPT and ensure the unconditional fulfillment by all parties to the Treaty of their obligations on the basis of the unity of three fundamental components: nonproliferation, disarmament and the peaceful uses of atomic energy.
