Russia-NATO Relations Discussed in Brussels
OREANDA-NEWS. February 01, 2010. General of the Army Nikolai Makarov, Chief of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, First Deputy Minister of Defence took part in an NRC meeting on January 26 in Brussels.
During the meeting, General of the Army Makarov had discussed with NATO colleagues current issues of cooperation, including joint struggle against international terrorism, cooperation to prevent piracy in the Horn of Africa, the coordination of traffic in the airspace. Chief of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff reported on Russia's official position on expanding the alliance, participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe (CFE), missile defence issues, in particular, the deployment of air defence and anti-ballistic missile systems Patriot in Poland near the borders of Russia.
In his speech, Nikolai Makarov, said that it was time to give new meaning to relations Russia - NATO, set the pace of development cooperation and to give concrete content.
The meeting resulted in the adoption of a framework document on cooperation Russia - NATO military line.
Summing up its work, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia noted that the meeting discussed issues of international security on many issues, including on European security. Found areas of common interest, through which we intend to work further. Army General Makarov said that we are ready to cooperate on an equal basis, without prejudice to the interests of each other, for the safety of all and not for any country or group of countries.
During his stay in Brussels, General of the Army Nikolai Makarov, held bilateral meetings with Admiral Giampaolo Di Paola, Chairman of the NATO Military Committee, Gen. Hakan Syrйn, Chairman of the EU Military Committee, Admiral James Stavridis Commander, U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, General Franciszek G№gor, Chief of General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Miloe Miletich, Chief of General Staff of the Serbian Armed Forces.
