Dmitry Medvedev Had Telephone Conversation with Ban Ki-moon
OREANDA-NEWS. November 02, 2009. The development of the UN peacekeeping operations in Africa was discussed during the conversation. The President of Russia thanked the UN Secretary-General for his high assessment of Russian peacekeepers’ input and emphasised the interest in successful implementation by UN missions of the corresponding Security Council mandate.
The two leaders also discussed topics that would be on the agenda of the upcoming Copenhagen Climate Conference scheduled for December 2009. The President of Russia stressed that the UN platform is a universal and effective mechanism for seeking out solutions to the most difficult problems facing humanity. Mr Medvedev further stated that the most important challenge of the international climate policy is that of developing a common approach to the specific parameters of a new international climate treaty for the post-Kyoto period (after 2012), under the auspices of the UN.
Dmitry Medvedev expressed his condolences to Ban Ki-moon following the tragic deaths of UN personnel on October 28 in Kabul as a result of a terrorist attack. He emphasised the importance of the UN’s role in stabilising the situation in Afghanistan.
