OREANDA-NEWS. September 28, 2009. Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov met in New York with Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Lawrence Cannon on the sidelines of the 64th General Assembly session.

During the conversation, the sides exchanged views on a number of specific issues in Russian-Canadian relations with emphasis on streamlining their juridical base. They particularly emphasized the task of building up cooperation in the Arctic, including in a multilateral format.

Issues relating to UN system reform and Euro-Atlantic solidarity were discussed separately. Both sides concurred on the importance of restoring the previous scope of collaboration between Russia and NATO on issues of mutual concern, such as counterterrorism and Afghanistan.

Cannon briefed on progress in preparations for Canada’s upcoming G8 presidency in 2010.
