Dmitry Medvedev Made an Official Visit to Angola
OREANDA-NEWS. June 26, 2009. A one-on-one meeting between Dmitry Medvedev and Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos took place at the Presidential Palace, followed by bilateral talks with the two countries’ delegations taking part.
A joint communique issued following the talks sets out the priority areas for developing the partnership between the two countries. The sectors in question include mining, energy, transport, telecommunications, military-technical cooperation, health and education.
The communique notes the two countries’ common approach on ensuring peace and security and establishing a democratic world order based on the principles of multi-polarity, supremacy of international law and consideration for all countries’ interests. The document also states the need to reform the UN in order to make it more effective, and to build a new international financial system with the participation of the entire international community, including fast-growing economies and the African countries.
The two countries’ Presidents witnessed the signing of a number of bilateral agreements, in particular, an intergovernmental agreement on air transport links, an agreement on encouragement and mutual protection of investment, and the medium-term programme for economic, science and technology, and trade cooperation for 2009-2013. Agreements on cooperation in geology and higher professional education were also signed. Contracts were signed for the building and financing of Angola’s ANGOSAT national satellite communications and broadcasting system.
Following the talks the two Presidents made press statements and answered questions from journalists.
The visit included a meeting between the President of Russia and Speaker of Angola’s National Assembly Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, where the two leaders discussed issues related to interparliamentary cooperation. Dmitry Medvedev also met with Prime Minister of Angola Antonio Paulo Kassoma; the two leaders talked about issues regarding cooperation between the two countries’ governments.
