Russia and EU Discussed Prospects of UN Mission in Abkhazia
OREANDA-NEWS. June 18, 2009. A telephone conversation took place on June 17 between State Secretary, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Grigory Karasin and the European Union Special Envoy, Pierre Morel.
During the conversation discussions centered on the prospects of a further political process in the Trans-Caucasus following the end of the mandate of the UN Mission in Georgia and Abkhazia.
The Russian side qualified the UN Security Council’s debate on the current military-political situation in the region as very disquieting in terms of our encountering refusal to recognize the new political and legal setting there, which is fraught with a fresh wave of instability.
The Special Envoy told about the EU’s continuing activities in the South Caucasus.
Agreement was reached to continue the exchange of views during a meeting in Moscow on June 23, 2009.
