OREANDA-NEWS. March 10, 2009. Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov Meets with Rogelio Pfirter, Director General of the Technical Secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov received on March 10 the Director General of the Technical Secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Rogelio Pfirter.

An exchange of views took place on problems in the Chemical Weapons Convention implementation along with, inter alia, discussing issues in the nonproliferation of chemical weapons in the world, progress in the destruction of stockpiles of chemical warfare agents by possessor states, and certain problems of the functioning of the OPCW.

The sides noted the high level of cooperation between Russia and the Technical Secretariat, reiterated the striving to deal with existing problems in a constructive vein meeting the spirit of the Convention and pointed out the importance of strengthening the OPCW as a unique regime in the sphere of the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
