Ukrainian President Held Consultative Meeting on Judicial Reform
OREANDA-NEWS On 06 March was announced, that Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko held a consultative meeting on further implementation of legislative reform in Ukraine. The participants were Minister of Justice Mykola Onishchuk, Constitutional Court Head Andriy Stryzhak, Supreme Council of Justice Head Lidia Izotova and First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Oleksandr Lavrynovych.
In his opening word President Yushchenko said that “without proper functioning judicial system it is impossible to talk about equity in the society, democratization process or citizens’ ability to defend their rights”.
Despite a good basis for implementation of the reform, Victor Yushchenko said, the process practically has stopped due to political factors. “The Parliament has made first steps in examination of draft legislation in that field, but stopped the process not due to absence of professionalism, but because political leaders lack the will to continue it”, - he said.
Also the President emphasized that he would like to see judges contributing to the work of the Parliament and President of Ukraine aimed at pushing reforms forward.
