Russia and Nicaragua Conducted Talks
OREANDA-NEWS. November 6, 2008. Talks took place on November 1 between Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Nicaragua Samuel Santos, who was on a working visit to Moscow. There was also a meeting held between Santos and Igor Sechin, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.
During the conversations, which passed in a warm and friendly atmosphere, the sides had a thorough exchange of views on key issues in Russian-Nicaraguan cooperation and on topical international problems.
Sergey Lavrov expressed his deep gratitude to the Nicaraguan side for the decision to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. This was a responsible step representing a big contribution to the formation of a just, multipolar world.
The central place in the course of the conversations was allotted to questions of further development of bilateral relations in different fields, including a number of specific projects. The sides spoke for the further intensification of political contacts between the two states, including at a high and the highest level.
Special attention was paid to the augmentation of economic and commercial interaction and to cooperation in the fields of energy, infrastructure, transport, fishing and tourism. It was pointed out that the current year’s working visit of Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sechin, and trips to Nicaragua of a number of Russian expert groups had helped deeper acquaintance of specialized ministries and departments and domestic business entities with the possibilities of cooperation with the partners in Nicaragua. This is conducive to imparting proper dynamics to bilateral economic ties. The line on intensifying delegation exchanges will be continued.
Lavrov and Santos reaffirmed the mutual orientation towards continuing a regular and substantive political dialogue and strengthening interaction within leading international organizations, primarily the UN, in the interest of solving key global and regional problems.
