OREANDA-NEWS. May 21, 2008. The Trans-Baikal Region is a new region within the Russian Federation established on March 1, 2008, through the merger of Chita Region and the Aginsky Buryat Autonomous District. The President signed the corresponding constitutional law in July 2007.

The new region will hold elections to the regional legislative assembly on October 12, 2008.
