Armenian President Asked Putin to Help Return Captives from Azerbaijan`
OREANDA-NEWS. Armenian President Armen Sarksyan sent a letter to Russian leader Vladimir Putin with a request to help return prisoners of war from Azerbaijan to their homeland. As Sarksyan writes, the Armenian society and diaspora “are deeply concerned about the situation of soldiers and civilians in captivity in Azerbaijan.”
“The mediation of the Russian President will be of great help in resolving the extremely painful issue of returning our prisoners of war, civilians, as well as the bodies of the dead captured by Azerbaijan,” the letter, quoted by the press service of the President of Armenia, reads.
The conflict between Yerevan and Baku in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated in late September. On November 9, with the assistance of Russia, the parties signed a ceasefire agreement. However, in Armenia the agreement was perceived as a betrayal; there are numerous protests against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who signed the agreement. He himself called for an end to internal conflicts in the country.
