OREANDA-NEWS   The official opening of the Consulate General of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in the Novosibirsk Region took place on March 9 in Novosibirsk, according to the Russian Export Center (VEB.RF Group).

"This is the second office of the Consulate General opened in Russia to develop and strengthen bilateral relations," the statement said.

It adds that Myanmar is an exotic destination for Siberian exports with high development potential. Located in Southeast Asia, the state is famous not only for its archaeological and cultural heritage, but also for its desire to develop mutually beneficial cooperation with the regions of Russia.

"Today, with the opening of the Consulate General, we are starting a new page in the relationship between the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and the Novosibirsk Region. I am sure that the establishment of a permanent office of the Consulate General will make our region and four other Siberian regions of our country, which are part of the consular district, the Altai Territory, Kemerovo, Omsk, and Tomsk regions, more accessible to Myanmar citizens. In turn, our citizens will discover a lot of interesting things about your beautiful country," said Andrey Travnikov, Governor of the Novosibirsk Region.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar U Tan Swe noted in his speech that Novosibirsk is the main economic, commercial, industrial and financial center of the Asian part of Russia, the only Russian city with direct air links to Myanmar, and a kind of friendship bridge between Myanmar and Russia.

During the opening of the Consulate General, the parties discussed the development of cooperation in various fields. It should be noted that an important stage in the development of cooperation between Russia and Myanmar was the signing in 2023 of a Memorandum of Cooperation between the EEC and the Government of Myanmar, which provides for joint work in the fields of customs and technical regulation, industry, energy and other sectors. In December 2024, Novosibirsk and Mandalay (the second largest city in Myanmar) signed a Memorandum of Understanding and established twinning relations.

"Given the rich natural and mineral resources, diverse agricultural base, relatively low labor costs, the Myanmar Government's plans for full electrification of the country by 2030, and, importantly, special attention to infrastructural and economic development, serious prospects open up for our entrepreneurs. Siberian regions can present solutions for water purification, electricity generation for rural areas and small farms, processing, conservation and storage of agricultural products, fish products and seafood, supply and manufacture fertilizers, pharmaceutical products and medical devices, equipment for wood processing and construction, special equipment," commented Elena Bragova, head of the REC representative office in Novosibirsk.

The predominance of resource-intensive industries due to the country's abundance of natural resources can be attributed to the peculiarities of doing business in Myanmar. At the same time, certain types of natural resources are practically not being developed. In particular, Myanmar has rich teak reserves, but the country's timber industry is not developed.

In addition, the Government of Myanmar is implementing programs to modernize transport infrastructure and increase productivity in the agro-industrial complex. That is why supplies of equipment, machine-building products and fertilizers from the Novosibirsk region are of the greatest interest to foreign partners.

Myanmar is also working to attract foreign investment. A list of promising industries for investors is available on the website of the Ministry of Investment and Foreign Economic Relations of Myanmar.

The services of the Russian Export Center, including the consultation "Product Conformity Assessment Requirements", the services "Market Search" and "Barriers and Market Requirements" on the My Export platform and the Exporter's Knowledge Base, a multimedia library on the REC website, will help to study the specifics of doing business with Myanmar.
