Moscow Is Satisfied with a Decision on Kerch Incident Made by the Hague Court
OREANDA-NEWS. On November 25, the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Moscow authorities are satisfied with the ruling on the incident in the Kerch Strait (where Russian border guards detained three Ukrainian warships with crews in November, 2018) made by the UN International Court of Justice in the Hague.
According to Russian party, the decision has nullified Kiev’s attempts to complicate Russia’s position in the trial. “The Russian Federation is fully satisfied with this decision, which takes into account all its fundamental proposals expressed during the arbitration meeting held a day before in the Hague,” the TASS agency’s interlocutor in the ministry said.
As the Russian Foreign Ministry reported on November 23, Moscow and Kiev failed to resolve the dispute over the incident in the Kerch Strait during the first meeting of the international court in the Hague, which took place on November 21. It was noted that the court should independently decide on “suspended” issues, for example on the dividing the process into two stages: jurisdictional and substantive. In the course of the first, the presence or absence of competence of the tribunal to consider this case is established. In the course of the second, the examination of the case on the merits is conducted.
Later, Alexander Molokhov, the head of the working group on international legal issues at the Permanent Mission of the Crimea to the President of Russia, announced a plan to hold in 2020 an international public tribunal on the provocation in the Kerch Strait.
