OREANDA-NEWS  More than 1.65 million tons of recyclables were collected in the capital in 2024 as part of the separate garbage collection program, Pyotr Biryukov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Housing and Communal Services and landscaping, told reporters.

"The city has been operating a separate garbage collection program for five years, and the achieved indicators confirm its effectiveness and relevance among Muscovites. The amount of recyclables collected is constantly growing, in 2024 alone, over 1.65 million tons were allocated and sent for processing, before the start of the program in 2019, only 450 thousand tons were allocated," Biryukov said.

The deputy mayor said that the main task was to make the process of separate garbage collection as convenient as possible, so they chose a simple two-container system.

"Branded containers with blue and gray markings have been installed in courtyards and near social facilities, waste paper, glass, plastic and metals can be thrown into the former, and the rest of the waste into the latter. Waste collection and disposal is carried out by about 1,000 garbage trucks with the appropriate color indication," the deputy mayor recalled.

He said that the contents of the tanks are taken to sorting plants, where, with the help of automatic separators and under the supervision of specialists, recyclables are divided into dozens of components - various types of plastic and waste paper, glass of different colors, ferrous and non-ferrous metals. They are then sent for recycling.
The head of the municipal management complex stressed that the separate garbage collection program will be continued in 2025, participation in it is still voluntary.
