OREANDA-NEWS More than 5,600 birds were rescued in the Krasnodar Territory from fuel oil pollution after the tanker crash, the regional Department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia reported on Monday.

"In the centers where birds are washed and rescued, more than 5,600 birds were helped," the report says.

According to the Kuban operations center, in particular, about a thousand birds were accepted in the Krasnodar Safari Park.

"Birds have been arriving every day for three weeks now. Mostly from Anapa. They are being brought to us by buses. More than 1,000 birds have already arrived," Kristina Hanahu, the Safari Park's commercial director, said in a statement.

According to her, about 245 birds have already been released back into the wild.

"Ornithologists and veterinarians have confirmed that the birds are no longer in danger. Here, on the Kuban River, the old coots immediately joined their relatives - now it will be easier for them to undergo rehabilitation," said Khanakhu.

She added that the park is ready to receive 600 more birds.

On December 15, fuel oil tankers Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft 239 crashed in the Kerch Strait, and a fuel spill occurred. Oil products washed ashore, the pollution stretched for more than 60 km.

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, four tanks with petroleum products were damaged in the tanker crash, and about 2.4 thousand tons of fuel oil fell into the sea. In total, over 102 thousand tons of sand and fuel oil were exported from the Kuban coast.

On December 25, the Governor of the Krasnodar Territory, Veniamin Kondratiev, introduced an emergency regime in the region. On December 26, a government commission chaired by the head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation, Alexander Kurenkov, decided to introduce a federal emergency.
