OREANDA-NEWS In February 2024, the trade turnover between Russia and Japan collapsed. This is reported by TASS with reference to data from the Ministry of Finance of Japan.
In annual terms, trade decreased by 16.5 percent to 104.1 billion yen ($690 million at the current exchange rate). Shipments of goods from Japan decreased by a third (33.6 percent), and from Russia — by 10.2 percent.
Exports to Russia of medical devices decreased the most (minus 94.2 percent), passenger cars (minus 4.5 percent), as well as spare parts (minus 37.4 percent). Grain shipments to Japan decreased by 82.7 percent.
Last year, trade decreased by 45.3 percent to 1.43 trillion yen (about $9.6 billion). The market of iron (minus 94.2 percent), non-ferrous metals (minus 93.4 percent), rubber (minus 59.9 percent) cooled the most. Russia, in turn, began to supply less fruits (minus 96.7 percent), oil (minus 94.8 percent), and medical products (minus 75.6 percent).
Earlier in February, Japan expanded the list of goods prohibited for export to Russia by another five categories. These included CNC machines (numerical control) and parts for similar devices. Prior to that, the ban applied to integrated circuits and parts for them, optical equipment, communication equipment, electronic equipment (diodes, transistors, digital cameras), as well as parts for the design and manufacture of semiconductors. Currently, there are about 50 categories of goods on the sanctions list.
