Majority of Russians Advocate Full Gender Equality, Poll Shows
OREANDA-NEWS. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) held a poll on gender equality. It is supported by majority of Russians, while one third of respondents advocate feminism.
Feminism is supported by only a third of Russians (31%), although the majority (62%) of the citizens advocate full equality of the rights of women and men, according to VCIOM poll.
According to the study, 55% of respondents are against feminism, 14% found it difficult to answer. The most active supporters of this movement (44%) is the age group from 18 to 24; Russians less sympathetic to feminism (29%) are 45-59 years of age. Most often, citizens whose age is from 35 to 44, do not support the movement (59%).
At the same time, 62% of respondents believe that it is necessary to strive for full equality in the rights of men and women, and 59% support equal duties for both sexes. 33% of citizens do not strive for equal rights, and 37% do not stand for equal duties.
According to 32% of Russians, full equality of duties is possible in all spheres, 53% believe that this can be only in certain areas. Another 9% are confident that equality of duties is generally impossible.
The possibility of full equality of duties in all spheres is more often allowed by men - 37%, less often women - 27%. On equality only in certain areas women speak more often - 57%, less often men - 48%.
Equality in all spheres is allowed by 38% of Russians, 42% chose the variant “only in certain areas”. The impossibility of equality of rights is recognized by 13% of respondents.
Challenges and problems which modern women face were discussed during a broadcast of “Sputnik” radio by a feminist, politician Tatyana Sukhareva and a psychologist Larisa Ovcharenko.
All-Russian poll on gender equality was conducted on March 10, 2019. Russians from 18 years of age took part in the survey. The chosen method was a telephone interview among 1600 respondents. For this sample, the maximum error size with a probability of 95% does not exceed 2.5%.
