London Court Denied US Extradition Request for Assange
OREANDA-NEWS. On January 4, the London court rejected a US request for the extradition of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.
According to BBC, this decision was made in connection with the journalist’s mental health problems. District Judge Vanessa Baraitser explained that the defendant is showing symptoms of depression and suicidal tendencies. “The overall impression is of a depressed and sometimes despairing man fearful for his future,” she said.
The judge’s decision can be appealed by the lawyers of the American side.
Earlier on Monday, it became known that Assange’s supporters have become participants in protests near the courts in Great Britain and the United States. People also held a rally in New York. Dozens of supporters of the journalist gathered near the British Consulate. Demonstrators demand the release of the founder of WikiLeaks. Assange was also supported by some British trade unions.
