Kurds Set Fire to Oil Wells in Northern Syria and Shelled Turkish City
OREANDA-NEWS. Syrian information agency SANA reported that Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) set fire to several oil fields in rural area of Al-Hasakah in northeastern Syria in response to shelling of the Turkish army. NTV channel informed that the sounds of explosions were heard in the Syrian city of Ras Al-Ayn, located on the border with Turkey. According to SANA, the Kurds set fire to the tyres, and also began to burn documents at their headquarters, which is located in this city.
Kurdish fighters fired several shells at the Turkish border city of Nusaybin. Turkish information agency Anadolu said that at least six rockets were fired from the Syrian city of Qamishli to Nusaybin, and NTV said that two of them attacked the Turkish city.
Earlier on October 9, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced the start of military operation against Kurds in northeastern Syria under the name Peace Spring. This is the third such operation of Ankara against the Syrian Kurds. Turkey considers the SDF militants to be terrorists.
Many Western countries demanded that Turkey cease the operation. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker believes that these actions will not lead to good results. France demanded to convene a UN Security Council meeting because of the operation. The US authorities refused to support Turkey. The Pentagon withdrew its troops from the territory where the Turkish operation began.
After it, Reuters agency reported that the UN Security Council will be held on October 10 by the request of France, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium and Poland.
