Interpol Issued Arrest Warrant for Two Russians over Explosion in the Port of Beirut
OREANDA-NEWS. According to the Lebanese national agency NNA, Interpol has issued an arrest warrant for Russian citizens Igor Grechushkin and Boris Prokoshev as the involved in an explosion in the port of Beirut.
A dry cargo ship Rhosus belonged to Grechushkin. The ship was used to transport ammonium nitrate from Batumi to Mozambique. The vessel made an unscheduled stop in Lebanon due to technical problems, but after an inspection, the port authorities prohibited it from returning to sea. As a result, Grechushkin went bankrupt and actually left their crew alone: Russian and Ukrainian sailors had to stay in Beirut for about a year, they were not paid a salary and were not given food. The captain of Rhosus was Prokoshev.
In August 2020, due to the detonation of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, confiscated by the customs services from the ship back in 2014 and stored in a warehouse, a powerful explosion thundered in the port of Beirut. 190 people died, more than six thousand were injured. The capital of Lebanon was recognized as a disaster area, until September 19, a state of emergency was in effect in the city.
After that, a series of anti-government rallies took place in Beirut, as a result of which Prime Minister Hassan Diyab announced the resignation of his government in full.
The Lebanese court requested an international arrest warrant for Grechushkin and Prokoshev in October last year. Interpol also issued a red tag to an entrepreneur from Portugal, who in 2014 assessed warehouse number 12 in the Lebanese harbor, where an explosive substance was stored.
