In Warsaw, Police Used Tear Gas during Protest Action against the Ban on Abortion
OREANDA-NEWS. On Friday night, law enforcement agencies of Warsaw used physical force and tear gas during protests that erupted after the Constitutional Tribunal ruled that termination of pregnancy due to fetal pathology does not comply with the provisions of the country’s Constitution.
This was announced at a press conference by the spokesperson of the city police, Sylvester Marchak. “Yesterday we were dealing with a large wave of aggression, they threw stones at the police,” he said, stressing that this is unacceptable. “Physical force and gas were used yesterday,” he said. According to him, 15 people were detained.
On Thursday, opponents of the ban on abortion came to the building of the Constitutional Tribunal to express their position. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, organizing mass events is prohibited, so the actions were not numerous, and they were held with increased attention of the police. By evening, the number of protesters began to grow. From the Tribunal they went to the house of the Deputy Prime Minister of Poland, Jaroslaw Kaczynski. Clashes with the police began, and officers had to use tear gas.
