OREANDA-NEWS  In Abkhazia, they plan to turn off the Internet at night to combat illegal mining of cryptocurrencies.

The headquarters for ensuring energy security of Abkhazia, established in the Government of the republic, appealed to Internet providers with a request to turn off the Internet on December 10 from 00:00 to 07 a.m. throughout the republic in order to counter mining.

The government will consider the issue of introducing an emergency regime in the energy sector on December 10.

CEO of Chernomorenergo Timur Djindjolia said at a meeting of the headquarters that 40-45 megawatts of the total energy system are consumed by operating mining farms in Abkhazia.

"This is the mining that consumes about 350 million kWh per year. To make it clear, this is half and even a little more than our deficit, which is now taking shape," Jinjolia noted. "Even in such a difficult situation, illegal mining continues, which further exacerbates the crisis, which is causing the entire population of the country to suffer today."

Schools and kindergartens in Abkhazia will be closed for a week due to the energy crisis.
