Human Rights Activists: at Least Five Thousand Russian Women Died from Domestic Violence in 2018
OREANDA-NEWS. Almost two-thirds (61%) of Russian women killed in 2018 were victims of domestic violence. Such data on Tuesday, February 16, was published by the participants of the project of the Consortium of Women's Non-governmental Associations, which won the online hackathon of social data projects «Searchlight-2021».
This means, that at least five thousand women died from domestic violence in Russia. This is 20 times higher than the police data — according to statistics of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, there were 253 women killed during family and domestic conflicts in 2018.
The authors of the project analyzed the sentences of Russian courts for 2018 on the following crimes: murder (Parts 1 and 2 of Article 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation), murder in a state of passion (Article 107) and intentional infliction of serious harm to health, resulting in the death of the victim by negligence (Part 4 of Article 111).
Previously, human rights activists independently studied more than 500 sentences in cases of murder of women to identify cases where victims of domestic violence died. This data turned out to be enough for the program to learn how to determine whether a case relates to domestic violence or not. In total, the program analyzed more than 2,000 sentences.
Using a program created at the hackathon, the project participants found that 61% of the total number of women killed in 2018 were killed by partners or relatives. They also found, that victims of domestic violence account for almost every fifth murder in Russia — 18.8% of the total number of women and men killed, the Consortium of Women's Non-Governmental Organizations noted.
The authors of the project noted, that the obtained 61% coincides with the average global level of domestic violence given by the UN (58%).
