OREANDA-NEWS. Russia needs to improve the judicial system, but even with its perfect structure, it is impossible to apply such a measure of punishment as the death penalty. This was announced to the Russian media by the head of the Human Rights Council under the President of Russia Mikhail Fedotov.
According to him, during the death penalty a person takes on the right to decide the issue of life and death. “But he does not have the right to take the life of another person, even if he uses court procedures for this”, he explained. The head of the council also recalled that the death penalty is a sentence not subject to review after judicial execution. “A mistake is never ruled out, and it's impossible to reanimate a person”, Fedotov noted.
In addition, Fedotov noted that for terrorists, for example, there is a preventive measure in the form of life imprisonment in maximum security colonies, where the offender "will never be able to do harm to society". The moratorium on the death penalty in Russia has been in force from the day the country joined the Council of Europe. In 1997, Russia signed the protocol to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms on the abolition of the death penalty.
