OREANDA-NEWS  The head of the political bureau of the Palestinian Hamas movement, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in an attack on his residence in the Iranian capital Tehran, the Mehr news agency reported, citing a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

"The head of the political bureau of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was martyred in Tehran," the article says.

According to the agency, one of Haniya's bodyguards was also killed as a result of the shelling. The circumstances of the incident are being investigated.

In an official statement, Hamas acknowledged the death of the head of the politburo, blaming Israel for the incident. The movement said the attacks occurred after Haniyeh took part in the inauguration ceremony of Iran's new president, Masoud Pezeshkian.

Representatives of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) declined to comment to CNN after Haniyeh's murder, saying they "do not respond to foreign media reports." The White House told the TV channel that they were aware of the incident and refused to discuss it further.
