Governors in Russia will Be Renamed and Allowed to Hold Office for More Than Two Consecutive Terms
OREANDA-NEWS. A draft law on regional power has been submitted to the State Duma. As one of the authors of the document, the head of the Federation Council committee on constitutional legislation, Andrei Klishas, explained, this is the implementation of the provisions that are provided for in the updated Constitution of the Russian Federation.
In particular, the bill proposes to officially change the title of the position "governor" to the combination "head of the region". In addition, the heads of the subjects will be allowed to be elected for more than two terms, but will expand the grounds for early termination of powers. In case of dismissal from office, such a governor will not be able to occupy a similar position in any of the country's regions within 5 years, according to the Russia 24 TV channel.
The Kremlin said it is aware of a bill that lifts the restriction for governors to hold office for two consecutive terms. However, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that it was too early to comment on the document.
"The parliament will start working, there will be a corresponding study, and then the time will come, but for now it is too early to do it," he explained.
At the same time, speaking about the possibility of unifying the names of the heads of the regions, Peskov noted that the Kremlin as a whole shares this position.
"Of course, there should be only one presidential position," the Kremlin spokesman said.
Nevertheless, there are regional specificities (for example, in Tatarstan), and the Russian president is sympathetic to this situation, added Dmitry Peskov.
