FSB of Russia Detained Two Former Militants in Chechnya
OREANDA-NEWS. In the Chechen Republic, two former members of the gang, led by Shamil Basayev and Samir Ibn al-Khattab, who participated in the attack on the Russian military in 1999, were arrested. This was reported by the news agency RIA Novosti with reference to the Public Relations Center of the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB).
The detainees are natives of Chechnya Aslanbek Idalov and Salambek Idalov. According to the FSB, they participated in a clash on October 4, 1999, being members of Basayev’s and al-Khattab’s bandit formations with servicemen of the Russian Ministry of Defense near the Chervlennaya station of the Shelkovskoy District of Chechnya. Then, as a result of the battle, 15 soldiers of the Russian army were killed, 28 servicemen were wounded.
“The investigation establishes the role and specific actions committed by the suspects during the attack, checks their involvement in committing other crimes not related to the criminal case under investigation, and takes active measures to identify other members of the gang,” the FSB reported.
