OREANDA-NEWS. Ukraine is on the brink of environmental disaster due to water loss, specialists said. According to experts, politicians continue to squander water resources and speculate on the topic of ecology, instead of solving the problems.

“We are on the brink of an environmental disaster. Ukraine is losing water catastrophically. It is not enough that Ukraine one of the poorest countries in Europe, we are also very predatory towards this resource,” President of the Professional Association of Ecologists of Ukraine, Lyudmila Tsyganok, said.

Last year, experts warned that in 25 years Ukraine could face an environmental disaster that would force the country to import drinking water. According to scientists, the Dnieper River may shallow to critical indicators, and in the north of Ukraine steppes will remain instead of forests.

In recent years, more than 800 Ukrainian settlements have been left without their own water sources.
