OREANDA-NEWS. The European Commission proposed to temporarily ban using facial recognition systems in public places.

This was reported by Reuters agency with reference to 18-page document prepared by the institution. A ban can be introduced for a period of three to five years in order to assess the role of this technology in the protection of personal data of citizens and their right to privacy. In addition, the document invites EU countries to designate representatives who will be responsible for implementing the new rules.

Exceptions are planned for safety and research projects. According to Reuters’ sources, before the final decision, the Commission will examine the feedback on its proposals and present them in February.
