Court Arrested Six North Korean Poachers Who Attacked Russian Border Guards

OREANDA-NEWS. The Nakhodka City Court decided to detain for two months six fishermen from the DPRK from among those who attacked border guards in Primorye. This was reported to the Russian media in court on Monday. “Six materials on North Koreans have already been examined, they have been arrested for two months. Four others are being considered a preventive measure today”, the Russian media told the court. He added that other fishermen did not receive documents to select a preventive measure.
According to the FSS, Russian border guards on September 17, while patrolling in the area of the Quito-Yamato Bank in the Sea of Japan, a traditional fishing site, found two North Korean schooners and 11 motorbots engaged in poaching in the exclusive economic zone of the Russian Federation. The crew of one of the boats made an armed attack on the border guards. Both ships and 161 DPRK citizens were detained. As a result of the resistance to the border control officers, six DPRK citizens were injured of varying severity. One of them died from injuries.
The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed to the Charge d’Affaires of the DPRK in Moscow serious concern about the armed attack of North Korean sailors on Russian border guards and demanded that comprehensive measures be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. Since cases of border violations occur frequently.
Commenting on the incident, the Chairman of the Far Eastern Regional Organization of the Russian Seafarers' Trade Union of Sailors noted that cases of poaching of fishermen from the DPRK in the Russian waters of the Sea of Japan off the coast of Primorye became more frequent. According to him, mainly foreigners enter this zone under the pretext of shelter from a storm.
