AstraZeneca Suspended Coronavirus Vaccine Trials
OREANDA-NEWS. The British–Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca has suspended the third phase of trials of a coronavirus vaccine in the United States after one of the volunteers showed a side effect.
Company’s spokesperson Rebecca Robbins explained the pause as “a routine action which has to happen whenever there is a potentially unexplained illness in one of the trials, while it is investigated, ensuring we maintain the integrity of the trials.” She added that AstraZeneca is “working to expedite the review of the single event to minimize any potential impact on the trial timeline.”
The STAT portal clarifies that a trial participant who has a side effect from the vaccine “is expected to recover.” Sources of STAT claim that an unnamed patient participated in the second or third phase of trials of the coronavirus vaccine in the United Kingdom, but an AstraZeneca representative did not comment on this information.
The third phase of vaccine trials, which AstraZeneca is developing jointly with specialists from the University of Oxford, began in the United States in late August, involving 30 thousand American adults.
