Almost 90 Countries Supported the Initiative to Reduce Methane Emissions

OREANDA-NEWS. Almost 90 states have joined the EU and US initiative to reduce methane emissions. Among those who supported the project are half of the 30 countries that account for the largest amount of methane produced and account for two-thirds of the world economy, Reuters reported on Tuesday, November 2, citing a representative of the US administration.
The initiative, presented in September, assumes a reduction of methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030 compared to the level of 2020. Recently, it was supported by Brazil, one of the five largest producers of methane in the world. Three other Top-5 states — Russia, China and India — have not yet announced their participation, according to Reuters. An official statement on the matter is expected later in the day.
The UN World Climate Protection Conference continues in Glasgow, Scotland, from October 31. On November 1, Acting German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on world leaders to adopt more ambitious climate goals. «We are not where we should be yet», she said. According to Merkel, the emission reduction goals set out in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement «collectively did not lead to what we agreed on in Paris».
The Paris Climate Agreement was adopted on December 12, 2015 at the UN Climate Conference. It was signed by representatives of 196 countries of the world. It replaced the Kyoto Protocol that expired in 2020, which approved commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions only for developed countries. The document declared the goal to prevent the global average annual temperature on the planet from exceeding by more than 2 degrees Celsius from the pre-industrial level by 2100 and to take measures to keep warming within 1.5 degrees.
