OREANDA-NEWS More than a quarter of enterprises at Russian airfields - 49 out of 184 facilities - do not have the necessary equipment to scare away birds, which leads to their accumulations that are dangerous for aircraft flights, the press service of the Russian Environmental Operator (REO) said.
"The owners of the enterprises located at the airfields were supposed to complete the ornithological research by September 1. According to the results of the conducted research, 104 companies have been issued conclusions to date - 55 positive and 49 negative," said Denis Butsaev, CEO of REO, whose words were quoted in the company's press service.
According to him, among the 49 enterprises that received negative conclusions, 28 landfills and 19 waste sorting facilities.
"All violators are located in 31 regions. The conclusions were issued by specialized organizations with the involvement of scientists. Now the owners of facilities that have received a negative conclusion need to take measures to scare away birds and reapply for a conclusion, otherwise the facilities will be closed," Butsaev said.
According to the REO, there are a total of 184 types of MSW facilities in the Russian Federation within the boundaries of the sixth subzones of aerodrome territories (it is forbidden to place objects in such subzones that contribute to attracting and mass gathering of birds), they are located in 63 regions. "Of these, contracts for ornithological research have been concluded for 131 objects, of which 104 have been concluded, 15 do not accept flows of solid municipal waste (MSW) from 2025 according to the territorial scheme, the remaining objects must apply for research," the press service of the REO reported.
Scaring birds away from waste management facilities is carried out using various devices: bioacoustic installations, signal weapons (rocket launchers), gas cannons, rattles, mirror balls, laser repellents, nets, dummies (stuffed animals), chemical methods, using radio-controlled models, using birds of prey, radio-electronic and electromagnetic methods, it is said in the release.
REO is a public law company established by decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin in January 2019; the sole shareholder is the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation.
