OREANDA-NEWS  The government of Abkhazia has asked the Russian side to help prevent the energy crisis that threatens the republic next week, Acting Prime Minister Valery Bganba told Interfax.

"Unfortunately, the water level in IngurGES (Abkhazia's main source of electricity) is getting lower and lower. At this level, the station cannot operate and now operates only on the tributary. The output of IngurGES at the moment is 2 million 859 kW, and last day Abkhazia consumed 8 million 360 kW, taking into account the flow from the Russian side and our temporary shutdowns for 4 hours a day," Bganba said.

He said that the supply of the overflow from Russia has been paid for until Tuesday inclusive.

"And then the situation depends on how much we can find funds in the budget to pay for the overflow. If we cannot prolong it, then, of course, we will have a very serious situation. With minimal generation of IngurGES, we will not be able to provide the country with electricity. The situation is difficult, the inflow of water is expected only in spring," said the Deputy Prime Minister of Abkhazia.

Bganba said that he appealed to Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak to prevent the impending energy crisis.

"We discussed all issues related to the transfer and suspension of co-financing within the framework of the current agreement on the part of Russia. The issue is being discussed by the Russian side. There are no official answers yet," he said.

Speaking about the suspension of co-financing by Russia within the framework of the intergovernmental agreement on salary increases for the main categories of state employees and law enforcement agencies of the republic, Bganba noted that this does not apply to the payment of Russian pensions. "Pensions are received by citizens of the Russian Federation and the Russian Federation pays pensions to its citizens, there are no questions here. We are talking about co-financing salaries for state employees," he said.

According to the intergovernmental agreement, co-financing was to be carried out up to and including 2025, after which Abkhazia was to become self-sufficient, the acting Prime Minister of the republic recalled. "And the suspension is due to the fact that the Abkhaz side did not fulfill some points within the framework of the document, including the roadmap on energy. However, I do not see our side's fault in this part, since, in particular, the tariff is constantly increasing, although this is a great burden for our citizens. Another point is the lack of an investor (in the energy sector of Abkhazia), so it is difficult to fulfill the roadmap in this part," the acting Prime Minister said.

At the same time, Bganba is sure, "the main problems are related to the agreement on investment activities, which was not ratified by the Parliament of Abkhazia. " Unfortunately, many media outlets, among others, draw conclusions without even reading this document. To say in this case that Abkhazia does not want Russian investments is tactless, because it does not correspond to reality. The agreement contradicts the interests of Abkhazia and has nothing to do with the interests of Russia as a state. These are the interests of individuals who want to infiltrate the republic and use all opportunities," the acting Prime Minister said.

He added that we are not talking about Russian investments, but about private ones, which are negotiated with a large number of benefits. "If investments do not give a return to the state, which provides inexplicable benefits, is this an investment? I hope that the concerns of the Abkhaz side will be taken into account," the acting Prime Minister said.

He called unfair the accusations against the republic that what is happening is directed against Russia.

"The people of Abkhazia have always perceived and perceive Russia as the main partner with whom we have historically friendly relations. We support the Russian Federation on its path, including our guys who take an active part in the war zone. Let's hope that the situation with co-financing will also improve, at least in terms of salaries for state employees and employees of law enforcement agencies, which will help in paying for the overflow," Bganba said.
