A Prison Sentence was Canceled for Possession of a Small Amount of Drugs in Oregon
OREANDA-NEWS. Oregon became the first state in the United States to allow a small amount of any drug to be stored by the people. Now local residents who have a certain amount of prohibited substances in their homes do not fall under criminal liability. In addition, the state has significantly improved access to treatment for drug addiction. Residents can receive rehabilitation and other harm reduction services.
«This law is aimed at protecting people from harassment, assault and criminal liability by the state for drug use, and now they will have access to the necessary support,» said the executive director of the «Drug Policy Alliance» Cassandra Frederick.
In November 2020, Oregonians voted to decriminalize the presence of small amounts of hard drugs, including heroin and cocaine. Measure 110 assumes, that the presence of a certain amount of drugs, depending on the type, will be punishable by a fine of no more than $100.
